Abracadabra 2: Interview with Sylvester the Jester

We had the pleasure to meet with Sylvester the Jester – one of the performers at the Abracadabra 2 – the 2nd illusion show in Kuwait.

Sylvester the Jester

He is the world’s only living cartoon – one of a kind and original – is a world famous, comedy illusionist, inventor and artist whose surreal blend of Cartoonish visual comedy and innovative magic has garnered several prestigious awards and made him a frequent guest on TV shows around the world and has been honored in the high category of one the top acts in both illusion and comedy world.

Julles Fuller from Time Warner – the producer of Looney Tunes Cartoon – said “Until I saw him, I didn’t believe he was real”… source: www.sylvesterthejester.com.

  • EVENTmania: What got you into Magic?
  • Answer:  I invented a trick when I was 15. I had no real interest in magic at the time. My dad was really blown away and I had never seen him react to anything quite like that. After a reaction like that I was hooked.

  • EVENTmania: Did you have a mentor as you were learning the illusion, or were you self-taught?
  • Answer: For the first few years I was self taught I did get some lessons in sleight of hand from an amateur magician once. He seemed to be shocked at how fast I picked it up. And so was I. After that I had a few mentors …not that I learned magic directly from them but they were more inspirational mentors. Some of these were, Dai Vernon, Jerry Andrus, Peter Pit, Billy Mcoumb, Larry Wilson and Amazing Johnathan.
  • EVENTmania: What is your favorite genre of Illusion? Cards? Coins? Others?
  • Answer: I do not have a favorite but I would say that I love when someone does something new and original.

  • EVENTmania: What do you consider the one defining moment in your life that made you realize and inspire you to learn Illusions and become an Illusionist?
  • Answer:  I would say that one of the defining moments I expressed earlier when I told about inventing a trick and performing it for my Father.  A second one was when I saw the first Doug Henning magic special on television.  It really made me see the world in a whole new way.
  • EVENTmania: What do you consider to be the proudest moment of your career?
  • Answer: I hope my proudest moment is yet to come! But for now I would say that winning the Gran Prix and the Baguette D’ Or in the Monte Carlo Magic stars.
  • EVENTmania: Where do you feel the art of Illusion is heading in the near future?
  • Answer: It is useless to try to predict such things but in any event, Magic and Illusion is not art! They are proto forms. They are the Tree not the Fruit!  And so they are hopefully always evolving into some new sister form. Perhaps a new type of art or a new field of scientific discovery or who knows, maybe even a new religion! Magic is the great grandfather to all other forms.
  • EVENTmania: If you were asked to perform one and only one illusion act what would it be and why?
  • Answer: I guess I would do an effect I call the Hideous Grin. As it is funny, shocking and horrible at the same time!  It is something that few people have seen and no one can forget!

Sylvester the Jester (www.facebook.com)

  •  EVENTmania: What is your worst moment while performing in magic?
  • Answer: While I was in Korea in 1999-2000 and was performing a 20 minute act in 8 minutes!  Every single day, 2 to 4 shows a day for 13 months with no days off even when I was sick with a fever of 103 degrees Fahrenheit!
  • EVENTmania: What would your advice be for young practitioners?
  • Answer: Do not go where others have gone. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
  • EVENTmania: Thank you for your time and looking forward to see you tonight at the Abracadabra 2.
  • Answer: Can’t wait!

In case you missed him the last 4 shows, you still get the chance to see him tonight:

  • Feb-1:  4.30 PM
  • Feb-1:  7.30 PM

Abracadabra 2: Interview with David Lai

David Lai – whose origin is from Malaysia – is a young self-taught illusionist and a well-known mentalist.  At present, he is the director of the “Abracadabra 2″ – the illusion show, in addition to many of his previous shows he helped directed around the world. Sought by  many people, he is also listed on GOOGLE ‘s personalities… in which Tun. Dr.Mahathir Muhammad (Malaysia’s 4th Prime Minister) said “ How old is he? I’m very impressed!”

David Lai

“I’m a Mentalist, but it’s so hard explaining to people what a Mentalist is, so I’ll just stick to being called a Magician.” The source: http://www.mindofdavid.com/about

  • EVENTmaniaWhat got you into Magic?
  • AnswerPuberty actually… I was looking for an indifferent activity to get in when I was about 12 years old and magic found its way into my repertoire as nobody in class could perform magic yet.
  • EVENTmaniaDid you have a mentor as you were learning the illusion, or were you self-taught?
  • Answer: I was purely self-taught as having a teacher was very uncommon when started off in magic. Magic classes itself in Asia was rare during my era.
  • EVENTmaniaWhat is your favorite genre of Illusion? Cards? Coins? Others?
  • Answer: I only do mentalism, which literally translates into MIND MAGIC or magic with the mind. In lay people terms, I read their minds, bend their forks or spoons and move objects without touching them.
  • EVENTmaniaWhat do you consider the one defining moment in your life that made you realize inspire you to learn Illusions and become an Illusionist?
  • Answer: That’s easy. It was when I took up engineering. I’m a petroleum engineer by academic qualification. However, after taking up engineering, I knew that I hated it, and branched into magic full time right after completing my degree.
  • EVENTmaniaWhat do you consider to be the proudest moment of your career?
  • Answer: It was when I directed my very first fully fledged illusion show when I was 21. At that moment, I was still completing my engineering degree so I was very proud in the sense that I managed to juggle two very different areas of my life.
  • EVENTmaniaWhere do you feel the art of Illusion is heading in the near future?
  • Answer: The art of illusion is heading into a very modern and fast paced era where illusions will be performed in fast paced and to the beat of modern music. I see a lot of performers going into that direction these days and that’s one of the few ways to keep a modern audience up to their feet.
  • EVENTmaniaIf you were asked to perform one and only one illusion act what would it be and why?
  • Answer: The Suspended Animation, because that is so-called, world’s fastest illusion to date. Suspended Animation will be premiering in Kuwait for this year’s Kuwait’s Annual Illusion Show!
  • EVENTmania: Thank You for your time.
  • Answer: You are very welcome!

Thumb Up!
